    Bright shuffles pack following election
Executive decision: Councillor Bright has made changes to his team following last week's election
Executive decision: Councillor Bright has made changes to his team following last week's election

Council leader Morris Bright has relinquished his role as the councillor responsible for Elstree Studios following a mini-reshuffle of his executive.

Mr Bright has passed the portfolio on to the former leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, John Graham.

The changes come after former Potters Bar councillor Rebecca Foy stood down at last week's elections. She had previously held the housing and infrastructure portfolio.

Last month, Mr Bright was criticised by opposition councillors for holding a number of high profile positions within the borough's authorities.

He will retain responsibility for strategy, communications and community engagement.

Mr Bright also stood down as leader of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council at last night's annual general meeting of the authority.

Councillor Jean Heywood will take over the role, having ended her term as town mayor.

That honour now passes to Councillor Farida Turner, with Pat Strack acting as her deputy.

Mr Bright said: "It was always going to be the case that I wouldn't stand for re-election.

"I came by the leadership by default because it was meant to be Jean but because of an illness elsewhere she became town mayor.

"Since then I became leader of the borough council and it's such a huge group I have to be sensible. This is the right way forward.

"The studios were always in the property portfolio. They are the borough council's biggest asset. John looks after Bushey Country Club, so it's right he also looks after the studios.

"I look forward to working closely with him."

Mrs Heywood said: "I'm looking forward to it, particularly joint work with the borough - we have not done enough of that.

"We are currently working with Hertfordshire Highways for the works planned for Shenley Road.

"We have added a few bits for Families Day in the summer and we are hoping to add to the Christmas lights and include the shops a bit more.

"It will be a challenge, but there is a lot we can do for the town."

    Hertsmere Borough Council executive:

  • Councillor Morris Bright - leader

  • Councillor John Graham - finance and property

  • Councillor Jean Heywood - environment

  • Councillor Brenda Batten - leisure, culture and health

  • Councillor Hannah David - housing and planning

  • Councillor John Donne - community safety and transport

These changes are for the good of everyone associated with these councils.
Business should be more straightforward now Mr Bright has stepped down as town council leader, as it will be easier for different people to represent each body - the borough, the town, the studios etc - When one person is in charge of everything it is confusing and leads to allegations such as those earlier in the year.
    I hope it works out.

So when Ian Feeney and the Labour Group started to raise this in November, and were criticised for playing "political games" during the election, actually they were spot on?

The Tories flooded Brookmeadow on election day to get rid of Feeney - the thorn in their side - and the first thing Bright does is admit that he was right all along.

    Shameful.
