Glass recycling in the borough has received a boost after new bottle banks were installed at 14 sites.
Residents can now take empty bottles and jars to recycling centres in Borehamwood, Shenley and Radlett, in an effort to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Glass is one of the few materials Hertsmere Borough Council's waste vehicles cannot collect.
The new banks have sections for different types of glass, including green and brown-coloured items, as well as clear glass.
Gemma Godfrey, recycling officer, said: "The new glass banks look great and I hope residents will make good use of them.
"As we can't
currently collect glass with other household waste and recycling, it's important that residents are able to recycle it in an easy and convenient way at the banks.
"Recycling your glass will reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, which is really crucial at the moment as space is rapidly running out."
Ms Godfrey said there is an increasing demand for recycled glass products, with new bottles and jars among the possible creations.
The banks are for glass bottles and jars only.
Kitchenware, such as Pyrex and drinking glasses, spectacles, sheet glass and mirrors cannot be recycled in them.

Hopefully before long we will be able to recycle glass in roadside boxes at home.
This is the only way recycling works properly - when people can do it as easily as possible and thus not have to put too much effort in.
It might sound pathetic, but it is true.

Yes, hopefully I can have yet another ugly bin outside my house to add the four I already have.
This whole "green" business is just a way for Govt and council to cut costs and corners.
We should have one bin, collected daily.
The council and govt can use dole spongers to sort through the rubbish on council tax payers behalves.
This whole 2 weekly collection is a bad joke, and shame on society for putting up with it.
All because a few loud mouth dimwits shout "green" a lot.

If we'd have had an adequate bin in the first place and the council allowed us to put glass in it then this wouldn't be necessary.

I am all in favour of recycling, but the council seems determined to make it as difficult as possible by restricting what you can put in the kerbside bins. Some years ago I lived in Welwyn Hatfield and they provided a box for glass recycling. also, at one time they used to sell back compost at a reduced rate to local residents. I don't know if they still do but it was a good idea at the time.
